Intensive English Programme

The instructional Intensive English Programme (IEP) at TLH is designed to help non-native English speakers increase their English language skills. Launched in 1990, it was the first IEP offered in Malaysia. Our programme is exciting and engaging. We have trained thousands of Malaysians and non-Malaysians in our school. Our curriculum is designed for learners at all levels of English language proficiency. We emphasise the practice of oral and written skills for purposes of academic studies as well as business or professional and social communication.

Intensive English Programme

TLH conducts a 5-hour-a-day Intensive English Programme (IEP). Our daytime courses are designed for students who wish to improve their English proficiency while experiencing Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant culture. In the IEP, we use communicative learning methods, with a focus on developing language skills (that is, speaking, listening, reading and writing) and teaching grammar and vocabulary.

LEVELS

TLH has a 10-level programme. Each level consists offour weeks, or about 100 hours of classroom-based instruction. Assessment tests are given at the end of each course. To ensure that students are placed according to their level of proficiency, we require every student to take a placement test prior to joining our programme.

IELTS Preparation

Mastery level: Students possess scholastic and professional language skills, including presentation and academic writing.

Advanced grammar includes conditional, subjunctive and passive usage. Language functions such persuasion, suggestions and recommendations are taught.

Start of academic work includes reading and composition based on authentic articles. Extensive study of formal vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

A deepening of more complex grammatical structures, including modals, phrasal verbs, gerunds and infinitives. Composition writing and fluency training.

Focus on basic language functions is continued. Writing of short-stories, reviews and emails.

Focus on language functions, like describing, giving directions, asking for information, apologizing and complaining. Discussions of pros and cons. Writing of formal and informal letters and email.

Tenses, social conversation, cardinal and ordinal numbers, time, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs and opposites. Teaching of micro-skills such as skimming, scanning, inferring and guessing from context.

Review of the basics, emphasizing pronunciation, tenses and social conversation.

In our foundation course, students learn the basics from the alphabet, introductions, numbers, colours, simple tenses, pronunciation, etc.
